An Interview with Football Captain Akshay Harikumar!

Football is probably the most popular and widely followed sport in the world. IIT Rajasthan's hopes in football lie on the shoulder's of newly appointed captain, Akshay Harikumar. VBC caught up with him for some exciting bytes.

VBC: Akshay, ready for Varchas?

Akshay: Yes! I'm really looking forward to it. Varchas is our very own sports festival. The team is on a high after our first victory last month, and we are eager to do well at home. The team is looking forward to playing against other colleges of the country.

VBC: What will be your team composition?
Akshay: Well, football being popular, more than 20 guys come for practice. It's really hard to choose, but we will have a squad of 16for the fest. In matches, we will start with 4-3-3 formation. We like to play a calm game in which we control the tempo and we rely on a strong midfield to create chances.

VBC: It is your first tournament as captain. How do you feel?
Akshay: Excited. And hopeful of building on the form. Nervous too.. (Grim) I hope the team can put in their all.
VBC: How have you prepared for Varchas?
Akshay: We had a camp of two weeks in December. The team improved by leaps and bounds. We are not training that intensely this month, but we're working on our weaknesses and on improving the chemistry, which is a big factor.

VBC: As Captain, how do you plan to select your team?
Akshay: In my opinion, I would first select those who are talented, but also regular and dedicated. I'd try to keep a balance between players from all batches, so that, not only will we put in a great performance, but we'll be laying the foundation for the teams of the future.

VBC: What are your teams strengths, and weaknesses?
Akshay: The strength is our defence. We have a solid partnership between the centre backs, Nitin and Shriyesh. We also have really good full-backs in Sumit and Shashikant. We can really play some good football and build penetrating attacks. Sometimes, we don't give our full energy in winning back the ball. I'm worried about that. It lets oppositions build attacks of their own.But if we give a focussed performance throughout the entire game, I'm sure we'd go really far.

VBC: Who are your star players, the Messi's and the Ronaldo's?
Akshay: The thing about our team and style of play is everyone works together, be it attack or defence. If you look at it in that way, we don't have one star, we have 11.

VBC: What are your expectations for Varchas?
Akshay: I... I expect us to win a few games, because, they have it in them to go all the way.

VBC: You're performance has been below expectations, so much so that even that doesn't remain. Have you been given the post of Captain at a difficult time?
Akshay: No. It's... The only thing that was preventing us from victory in the previous games was the spirit and desire for victory. Hopefully the win in the last match has ignited that spark in the team. So it's not really a tough time, as we're actually on a high, relatively.
(VBC applaudes AHK for his belief in his team. Every team needs a captain with such trust.)

VBC: What is your view on the facilities provided for football in Varchas?
Akshay: The facilities for football can't be better in Jodhpur. We have the best grounds in the city and have hosted the National Games. I think the other teams will enjoy playing on the ground. It has a fantastic surface and is a joy to play on.

VBC: Any message for the IIT junta?
Akshay: Enjoy Varchas. Support our teams. Because we have worked really hard for this.

VBC: Okay then, have a great Varchas!
Akshay: Hmm, we will...

An Interview with Volleyball Captain Nishant Kejriwal!

With Varchas 2011 just a fortnight away, the excitement is getting closer and the anticipation larger, especially for the home teams to put in a solid performance and make a statement. The Varchas Blogging Club (VBC), caught up with Nishant Kejriwal, Captain, Volleyball team, to get a closer look on the team's preparation.

VBC: Hi Nishant. All set for Varchas 2011?
Nishant: Well, yes. Varchas is a huge festival for us, as it's our first sports festival here, and it's really close to our hearts. The nervousness is there, but so is the confidence.

VBC: What will be your team composition?
Nishant: Our regular team comprises of 20 players who practice all through the year. For the Inter IIT Camp, 15 players were selected. Twelve players formed the playing team. We will most probably go with the same composition that played in December.

VBC: How have you prepared for Varchas?
Nishant: Volleyball is a game which requires regular practice, as well as match practice. Practice gets us fitter, while matches greatly affect team chemistry. Also, maximum matches have to be played for greater exposure. Only then can we learn from our mistakes.

VBC: As Captain, what are your tactics for team selection?
Nishant: Volleyball is always about performance. If you perform, you're on the team. Initially, we needed tall players. Also, not many players play volleyball at the school level, so we need to generate a lot of interest in order to get a good team.

VBC: What are your strengths and weaknesses as a team?
Nishant: I think the spirit of the team is awesome. Suraj and Saurajit are brilliant and they really make a difference to the team. Also, there are some very talented players in the first year, so the team is growing and the flow of talent has not stopped. I think we are very lucky to have a team of this calibre from only three hundred students. Our weakness has been that we have not had the opportunity to play in front of our own students, so we do't know what the atmosphere will be like. I'm sure the crowd will back us all the way through. (Smiles)

VBC: What is the level of preparation?
Nishant:  We have performed extremely well, everyone is very confident. We will reach the finals and we will win! (Grins)

VBC: What are your expectations for Varchas?
Nishant: As I said, we hope to win. Our biggest threat is probably DCE. We won three straight matches in the Inter-IIT. After defeating Kanpur 3-1, the team is on an all time high. We are probably on the peak of our form now. Let us see what happens.

VBC: You have performed well over the last season. Is there scope for improvement?
Nishant: There is definite scope for improvement. Next year, we will lose some players and will need to improve the team performance, We also need regular coaches in order to acquire better skills of the game.

VBC: What is your view on the facilities provided for Volleyball in Varchas?
Nishant: The equipment available is very good. The court is up to the mark.

VBC: Finally, any message for the IITJ junta?
Nishant: The Volleyball team has been performing well ever since the very first year of the establishment of IITJ. I will be leaving captaincy soon and I wish the best for the team and I hope it continues to achieve greater heights!

VBC: Okay, all the best!
Nishant : Thanks a lot!

Varchas! (Edited from the article published on www.fadooengineers.com)

IIT Rajasthan brings “Varchas” to Jodhpur

Jodhpur: The Indian Institute of Technology, Rajasthan, which shifted base to Jodhpur just around half a year back, has already begun it's journey to people's hearts with it's very own sports festival, Varchas. Varchas is a festival, conceptualized and organized by the students of IIT-J. The registrations for the event have begun and the excitement is here.
The festival, the first of it's kind in Jodhpur, is set to be held from the 27th to the 30th of January. The Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan, was set up on 4th August, 2008. As of now, the college consists of three departments, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. After running successfully in Kanpur for two years, it finally came home to Rajasthan, it's home state in April, 2010. Currently functioning from a temporary academic campus at MBM Engineering College, Ratanada, the college is expected to shift to its permanent campus on Jodhpur-Nagaur Highway in the near future. The students presently reside at IIT Hostels, set up on New Pali Road. Even in the starting few years, the students of IIT Rajasthan have shown keen interest and fervour in extra-curricular activities like sports, dance, drama, music etc. Academics being their forte, students have never compromised with their priorities. Varchas is the brainchild of these very enterprising students, who felt the need for an Inter Collegiate Sports Festival to develop their ever expanding relationship with society.
Varchas, which means vigour in Sanskrit, involves many sports, including football, cricket, athletics, chess, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, table tennis and many more. The four day festival will begin with an Opening Ceremony on the 27th. The opening ceremony promises to be a grand event, with the agenda packed with an exciting cultural programme. The four days will fly by, with a bustling event schedule, loads of informal events, challenging quizzes, as well as the fun-filled excitement which accompanies festivals on IIT campuses. The expected footfall for the festival is 600 to 800 participants from all over the country. The fest is centred around a social motive, a stand to bring people out of their homes, to celebrate life, through sports. In view of this, the venue for the event ranges from the Gaushala ground for most events, and the imposing Barkatullah Stadium for the cricket matches. With the interest Varchas is generating, the packed crowds are sure to bring an air of excitement around the venues.
The students of IIT Rajasthan eagerly await the advent of their first ever sports fest at the national level. Varchas 2011 is here, waiting with open arms to embrace the love of the city and it's people. Varchas 2011 is here, for the country to stand up and recognize the importance of Sports in day to day life. :)

Inter-IIT Performance of IIT Rajasthan.

Dear Friends,

It is with great pride and happiness I announce that IIT Rajasthan performed brilliantly in the 46th INTER IIT SPORTS MEET 2010 held at IIT Delhi. IIT Rajasthan in its 3rd year at Inter IIT meet was again
successful in leaving its mark amongst the other fellow IIT's.
IIT Rajasthan won three bronze medals in the meet, highest among any other new IIT's.
Swathi Manda bagged a bronze medal again in the Discuss Throw (Women).
Manaram Bidsiya with his excellent performance bagged two bronze medals in 400m (Men) and 800m (Men). He is the first person to get a medal in Men's tally for IIT Rajasthan in any event. That a truly great
achievement in itself.
Besides, all the sports teams of IIT Rajasthan also performed brilliantly in the meet and kept other IIT's on their toes in the competition. Most of the teams were successful to reach the quarter finals and put up a great
show.
This is really a matter of pride for us. The entire family of IIT Rajasthan congratulates the medal winners and all the teams for putting up an excellent performance in the Inter IIT Sports meet 2010.

Regards,
Tejas Vijay Muley
General Secretary, Sports
IIT Rajasthan
